Pro's Corner: Referee Equipment Essentials Checklist

 

Loved or hated, the ref is an integral part of any hockey game. Be sure you’re ready to go at the first whistle with this equipment essentials checklist!

Uniform

  • Be prepared with two jerseys – one referee with sewn arm bands and one linesman or one linesman jersey and a set of arm bands

  • Grab an extra set of arm bands to have on hand just in case

  • Referee Pants with or without integrated girdle

Whistle

  • Check over your whistle to make sure it’s in working order and pick up an extra whistle to have in your bag just in case.

Screws, snaps, straps, nuts & bolts

  • Tighten all helmet screws

  • Replace any broken or missing buckles, snaps, and screws

  • Tighten skate blade screws if you are still wearing this kind of skate

  • Check all straps for wear & tear and get them repaired if necessary

Skates

  • Get a good sharpening and profile for your skating style

  • Check for damaged, rusted, loose, or missing rivets and have them replaced

  • Replace any worn or damaged laces. Have an extra pair or two in your bag for those unexpected breaks.

  • Look over your boots for any damage and bring them to Binnie’s for repairs

Other Equipment

  • Look over all other equipment for wear or damage and get it repaired as necessary.
